I like to have my students classify fruits and vegetables according to where they grow -- plants, bushes, or trees. This activity is a challenge to many.
FRUITS & VEGETABLES
LAS FRUTAS
Y LOS VEGETALES

Children may have never seen fruits and vegetables actually growing on plants, bushes, and trees. Through picture experiences and actual trips to the fields, children will gain a sense of the difficulty involved in harvesting these nutritious and delicious foods.

Notes:  Half of the produce consumed in the US is grown in California -- brocolli, celery, lemons, strawberries, apricots, onions, walnuts,
cabbage, peas, carrots, grapes, lettuce, tomatoes, plums, cherries, cotton, sugar beets, melons, and peaches.

Brocolli is harvested in winter when the ground is hard and slippery. "My shoes would sink into mud; my hands nearly froze as they sliced through thick stalks." -- César Chávez
