THE STORY OF THE UFW FLAG
Notes from FIGHT IN THE FIELDS: César Chávez wanted an eagle to show strength and power. The first version of the flags was an eagle that appeared on the Mexican flag with grapes instead of a snake and cactus.
"I came up with the idea of a thunderbird ... [with] straight lines and corners... but what César didn't like was ... two little feet on the thunderbird -- they looked like chicken feet." -- Richard Chávez, César Chávez's brother
So, the feet were replaced by a straight bar across the bottom. The eagle viewed upside down is an Aztec pyramid.
César Chávez came up with the colors -- white (hope for the future), black (problems of workers), and red (sacrifice required of them).
César Chávez wanted people to be able to reproduce the flag easily, and this design was very satisfactory.
