ANIMALS
LOS ANIMALES

César Chávez spent his childhood before the age of ten on his family farm. He enjoyed interacting with the horses, cows, chickens, and a cat.

The design for the flag of the United Farm Workers contains an eagle, a powerful Aztec symbol.  For more information, click on the button below to go to the "FLAGS" page.

In his later life, he had three dogs -- "Huelga" [Strike], "Boicot" [Boycott], and "Oso" [Bear]. One of his German Shepherd dogs is buried aside of him. (The César Chávez Foundation offers two plush toy dogs -- "Huelga" and "Boicott" to delight young children.)

César Chávez was also a vegetarian. Showing a great respect for animals and their right to a decent life, he said, "Kindness and compassion toward all living things is a mark of a civilized society. … Racism, economic deprival, dog fighting and cock fighting, bullfighting, and rodeos are cut from the same fabric: violence."

With a Venn diagram, compare animals that children interact with on a daily basis with those animals that were important in the life of César Chávez.
